  1. Fellowship Mission:
    An Arts Leadership Fellow has the unique opportunity to develop their artistic practice and its ability to engage with and impact society. Fellows will be able to collaborate with researchers in the arts, sciences, and humanities in order to create new and compelling multi-disciplinary work. Just as they are guided by veterans of the field, the fellows till begin to assist and guide undergraduates in the Arts Leadership Program to develop the techniques needed to redefine art in the new age.

  2. Fellowship Capacities:
    The UNM Arts Leadership Program offers a fellowship to MFA students whose work, skill set, and personal capacity are demonstrated to be of the highest level. During their ? year academic period the fellows will receive a ? stipend. As a part of the fellowship students are required to teach or assist with one ALP course per semester. Furthermore fellows are required to present an end of semester review to their committee in addition to the standard bi-annual graduate reviews.
    Each fellow will work with an advisor who will guide the student in their research and collaborations. As a part of the Art Leadership Program each fellow will be expected to perform research on the subject of their project and produce documentation. Conducting interviews and site visits , along with connect to field experts and affected parties is the process of the ALP work method.
    Fellows should gain behind the scenes experience through their artistic work and their work for the program. ALP brings in socially conscious artists working through the country and the globe to speak about their work and educate students. Additionally students are encouraged to attend and participate in the countless artistic events occurring in the southwest region. Arts Leadership uses all possible resources to mature and refine a students abilities but the fellows of ALP are expected to go a step farther and begin adding to the establishment of the art world.

    1. To your ? marks above: Yes, I think the fellowship should be for a full academic year (though it could be a full 12 months: August through July). I think it will need a stipend. Also, I like how you include "adding to the establishment of the art world", which emphasizes the need to be taken seriously in one's artistic practice, too.

  3. Thank you Tori for sharing your Fellowship Mission and Capacities Ideas. You made some good points that and made things concise in a great way. My team and I will reference your ideas when working on our revisions. Thank you again.

    The following posts are only to share the preliminary paper my team and I put together and presented in class on Wednesday. I'm going to break it up into different posts to allow for comments to be made section by section.

  4. This is a list of needed Corrections and Modifications that need to be made for the Fellowship paper submitted in class on Wednesday. This list was made from the notes taken in class. Please feel free to add or modify this list:

    Fellowship Areas that need correction:

    1) Make the Fellowship one year long instead of two.

    2)The mission statement needs more emphasis on building and working in a collaborative way to serve the community with a sense of togetherness. Our current mission statement had implications of this but needs more expressive verbiage.

    3)Take out the Low residency idea (we discussed a way that low residency could work in some cases but as a whole lets take it out)

    4)Take out the retreat idea and keep fellows close to UNM so faculty doesn't have to travel. (A retreat seemed ok to include during a weekend in the summer but not in the context that I added in our original paper)

    5)How will impact or success of Fellows work be measured

    6)Add that those who have completed the Fellowship program are encouraged to cross over to be TA's in the Gen-ed class (we mentioned this on the Gen-ed paper but not the paper about the Fellowship)

    7)List some already existing classes at UNM that Fellows could gain some technical skills, for example: Intro to Electronic Arts

    Purpose:

    To develop change makers who are grounded in a strong awareness of self, others and real issues within the world today. To support these innovative artists in taking risks to reach for new discoveries that go onto generate applicable solutions. To establish a foundation of creative professionals that are able to build upon the knowledge, experiences and specialties of their colleges in a way that creates sustainable change.

RE: Suggestion #2 above: How about adding 2 sentences like these to the end of the Fellowship Purpose you have written above: "Program participants will be trained in a toolkit of professional skills which prepare them to catalyze social change in their local communities. Essential to this process will be the development of key community-based partnerships, grown over time and with an emphasis on strong relationship building to inform the artistic output."

    •UNM’s ASAP Fellowship Program is unique as fellows are able to interact with the distinctive New Mexico landscape, along with Native members of the community to gain a more in depth experience the spiritual connections between the land and the people. ASAP fellows are able to enrich their practice as they are fostered within a rich intergenerational environment that nurtures a grounded understanding of: individual and collaborative voice, the importance of heritage and the practice of “meaning making” which is all kept alive through the practice of story telling.

    Enriching the Experience:

    •Professional Development for Fellows: The ASAP Program has mobilized the Arts Learning Laboratory (ALL) to form a regional networking organization for the field work centered around Community Cultural Leadership, that is routed in the emphasis of participatory art-making. Fellows and other members of this organization come from various communities and universities within the South West. Members regularly come together to attend retreats to engage in exploratory learning through: forum discussions, workshops and rejuvenating activities that generates a professional, fun and connective environment for attendees.     oThis networking organization is funded through membership (however UNM Fellows are honorary members during their fellowship), which supplies funding not only for retreats but also the maintenance of a field based library. This field based library includes a collection of academic research and journals written by field experts. UNM Fellows are active contributors to this library as they are expected to document their project processes regularly. (attributed to Irene Loy)

    -Fellows are provided with free consultations or discounted services from select ASAP Network members.

    1. RE: the Retreat: It seems an annual summer retreat would be good for the ASAP Network, though I'm not sure how this fits with the annual conference. Would the retreat be the annual "convening", rather than a professional conference? Also, how would this annual model work for participation, given that the fellowship is for only one academic year?

    Fellowship Program Workshop Structure:

    UNM’S ASAP Fellowship Program is an intensive two year developmental journey. In efforts to increase diversity and capacity for change ASAP transforms into a low residency program after the first six months. Fellows are required to spend the first 3 months of their time on a foundations retreat in Taos New Mexico attending workshops where they are able to build a sound collective force among each other. During this time Fellows are introduced to innovative leaders from Native Communities and within the South West region who uphold the guiding principles of the ASAP. Additionally, fellows are encouraged to engage in daily meditations, journal reflections and discussion forums which generate self awareness and emphasis the importance of balance. This three month period is also enriched with professional development workshops which are hosted mentoring ALL faculty. These faculty members spend one week a month with these fellows on retreat and continue guiding workshops through webinars. Professional development courses include: 1) Systems and principles of thinking and meditation, 2) proposal and project packet design, 3) professional technical tools set, 4) improv network and facilitation skills, 4) organizational budgeting, 5) catalyzing art for impact, 6) voice empowerment through story telling, medium based communication and cultural engagement. For the following three months fellows spend time in Albuquerque working directly with community based art practitioners and advocates for change. Fellows are expected to: attend 1 organization based tours a week and volunteer a total of 8 hours a week. The remainder of time is to be spent networking and designing a personal project proposal packet and meet with mentoring faculty to problems solve any conceptual or technical issues. After this six month period Fellows are to present the mentoring faculty with a project proposal and are able to execute the rest of their fellowship through a low residency structure.

    1) Systems and principles of thinking and meditation

    2) Proposal writing, project packet design and articulating a theory of change:
    • Concise, practical, technical and inspirational articulation of projects.

    3) Professional technical tools set:
    • Introduction to systems of organization, creative entrepreneurial software (Audacity, Microsoft Express Studios, Microsoft Movie Maker or iMovie, constant contact), websites and community resources.

    4) Improv network and facilitation skills:
    •30 second elevator speeches; opening and closing a circle; critical thinking on the go

    4) Organizational budgeting:
    •Introduction to Excel; Funding a project in stages; Presenting budgets to potential funders; Sustainability- paying you and your team, and enrolling for individual healthcare plans; bookkeeping for year end tax preparation

    5) Catalyzing art for impact

    6) Voice empowerment through story telling, medium based communication and cultural engagement:

    -Topics: Meet with elders from Native communities to engage story telling as a means of maintaining a living cultural history.

    -Topics: Sensationalism and tokenizing verse engaged empowerment.

    -Topics: Articulating meaning making through alternative mediums. Art and color theory within social context.

    The University of New Mexico

    The Community Arts Leadership Fellowship is awarded to a graduate student enrolled at the University of New Mexico, to train as a leader who catalyzes social change through the arts. Applicants must demonstrate experience both in their chosen art form and in social activism.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    The fellow will engage in professional development over the course of the residency, including graduate level courses, workshops, and networking. Learning will accomplished primarily through conducting both field practice and research. Fellows will be expected to guest lecture/co-teach in the Community Arts Leadership Core Course. The fellowship will culminate in a public presentation of a community arts project completed in the Southwest, with lessons learned from the process.

    Terms of the Award
    The award is for $15,000. The fellow will work 20 hours each week during the Fall and Spring semesters, with some additional work to be conducted in the summer months following the academic year of the fellowship award. University-wide holidays are excepted.

    The fellow is required to give a presentation covering both the research and practice involved in the community project in Spring 2015—relating the work accomplished during the fellowship to others.

    Deadline for receipt of applications is April 25, 2014

    CAL Fellowship
    Mission and Description:

    UNM’s CAL Fellowship is awarded annually to select individuals who are actively pursuing a mission to deepen their community arts practice and further develop their role as “change makers”. Fellows as agents of innovation come from varied disciplines and contribute their own skills and points of view as artists to work in collaboration with their peers, mentors/professionals, and community partners to germinate new ideas for tackling real world problems together. This mission of this year-long program is to provide fellows with support and mentorship as they execute personal social action projects that facilitate collaborations, which cultivate flourishing communities.

    Competencies Expected to be Deepen During Fellowship:

    Selected Fellows are Master or post graduates, as well as Bachelor students who are: proficient in their artistic medium and have formerly demonstrated their ability to facilitate art based projects that engage communities. Annually eight fellows are selected by a team of professors of practice and community arts practitioners. Faculty from the CFA and ALL along with Community Arts Practitioners mentor these fellows to ensure that they are gaining proficient skills in 1) cultural leadership, 2) project design and execution, which includes budget planning, proposal writing for grants, professional management, facilitation and creative participatory skills, 3) a knowledge of how to draft contracts that include project roles and address collaborative intellectual property and 4) gain teaching/mentoring experience.

    * Supporting Mentor Community Practitioners: Michelle Otero, Molly Sturges, Daniel Banks, Valerie Martinez, Chris Jonas, David Gallegos, Henry Rael, Chrissie Orr, Edie Tsong, Mindy Grossenberg

    Fellows as advanced level multidisciplinary community artists are granted access to equipment and space within each studio department within the College of Fine Arts, so that they may effectively carry out their work. These fellows will also be granted a personal work/studio space off campus so that these change makers may more effectively meet and collaborate with community members.

    Fellow Duties:

    * Fellows contribute up to 20 work study hours per week as teaching assistants and guest lectors (20 hours includes preparation time) for the Intro to CAL general education and/or the CAL certificate program. Fellows are compensated $15,000 per annum along with university health insurance.

    * Fellows are to facilitate a community art project with at least one of UNM’s pre-selected organizations to work in conjunction with a Community Arts Practitioner. (Fellows may propose to work with a new organization but must acquire prior approval to do so).

    * Fellows will meet once every week for a Fellowship Seminar to discuss projects; this will give them time to stay up to date with other fellows and their work to solve any issues that may arise.

    * At the end of their fellowship, these agents of change are to contribute a research/documentation journal and video to the Southwest CAL Network Alliance Libraries. Journals and videos must articulate the fellows’: 1) theory of change, 2) discoveries made through their experiences as collaborative cultural leaders, 3) how they define CAL as a professional practice of cultural leadership, 4) a reflective impact summary of the project which they facilitated and 5) their personal means of using art as a catalyst to convey concepts of meaning making.

    * Fellows are to present their journals, project videos and impact studies at the annual Regional CAL Network Symposium.
